Definition

Ombudsman: Independent governmental official who hears and investigates complaints from private citizens against government and government-regulated agencies.

Secondary Information

Ombudsman services are managed through independent state agencies

Each agency has appointed regional ombudsmen who oversee the supports and services offered by the agency.

The various ombudsmen offices are organized and operate to meet the specific needs of the populations served. Supports and services may vary slightly between agencies.
