New Applicants for MA and MinnesotaCare: What to expect after you apply through MNsure

When you apply online, you will usually see your eligibility results on the computer screen right after you submit your application. But then what? And what if you applied with a paper application? Read this to find out what to expect.

This information is for people who applied online or with the paper application, Application for Health Coverage and Help Paying Costs (DHS-6696).

Online Applications

When you apply online at MNsure.org you will see preliminary eligibility results after you submit your application. It may be helpful if you print this page. This may not be the final result, but it lets you know if you appear to be eligible for a certain program. You may need to submit more information before your eligibility results can be finalized.

Medical Assistance (MA)

If your preliminary eligibility result says that you are eligible for Medical Assistance (MA), watch your mail. Within three weeks you should receive one or more of the following:

  • • A Minnesota Health Care Programs ID card. This means you have health care coverage.
  • • A health plan enrollment letter or a health plan selection packet with information about selecting a plan. You will only receive this if you are required to enroll in a managed care plan.
  • • A letter titled “Health Care Notice” asking for more information. When you get this, it means your eligibility has not yet been decided and your application is still pending. When we get the information the letter asks for, we will complete your eligibility determination. The letter will tell you what we need and when we need it. If we do not have the information by that date, your application will be denied and you will have to reapply.

  • If you DO NOT receive either an ID card or a letter within three weeks, call the Minnesota Health Care Programs (MHCP) Member Help Desk or the county office in the county you live. They will be able to tell you the status of your application. Do not file another application.

Call the MHCP Member Help Desk at 651-431-2670 or 800-657-3739 if you have questions about your coverage and how to use it. You may also refer to the Member Evidence of Coverage.

  • • A premium invoice
  • • In some cases, a letter titled “Health Care Notice” asking you for more information. This means your eligibility is approved, but we need more information from you. The letter will tell you what we need and when we need it. If we do not have the information by that date, your eligibility will end and your coverage will be closed.

  • If you DO NOT receive any of these documents within three weeks of when you submit your online application, call MinnesotaCare Operations at 651-297-3862 or 800-657-3672. They will be able to tell you the status of your application. Do not file another application.
