Timeline to Retirement (PDF)

Between 1997 and 2002, Project 2030 was a special project of the State of Minnesota to analyze the impact of the aging of the state’s population. This webpage includes information on that project and the publications written as a part of that effort. The state’s work on these issues is continuing under the title of Transform 2010, a project to transform our infrastructures and services to prepare for the senior boom that will begin when the boomers turn 65 beginning in 2011. Check out the webpage called “transformation” in the aging section of the DHS website for more information.

Project 2030
• It was a special project of the State of Minnesota coordinated by the Minnesota Department of Human Services between 1997and 2002. The project was carried out in partnership with the Minnesota Board on Aging.
• Its purpose was to identify the demographic realities of the aging of Minnesota’s population and prepare the State’s response to the baby boom generation that begins turning 85 in 2030.
• The coming "senior boom" will permanently change Minnesota’s age structure, and has implications for all segments of society.
• We need to understand what these changes mean for ourselves, our communities and our state and local governments.

Project 2030 addressed four major themes
• Help baby boomers save and prepare for their retirement and old age.
• Emphasize personal responsibility for long term care planning and health promotion and maintenance.
• Increase "age-sensitive" physical, service and social infrastructures at the community level, including wise land use and community design, life cycle housing, responsive service delivery systems and strong social ties within communities.
• Continue economic vitality of communities and the State through creative use of our aging population, both in the work force and non-paid roles.

Project 2030 Reports:
Project 2030 focused on analyzing the impact of the aging of the state’s population, and over 15 publications were written and distributed to interested individuals and groups.
