Indian Elder DeskThe Indian Elder Program increases awareness and accessibility to services for Indian elders in urban Indian communities and on our 11 Indian reservations across Minnesota. The Minnesota Board on Aging in American Indian Elder Program purpose is to increase awareness of and improve accessibility to services for Indian elders in urban Indian communities and on 11 Indian reservations across Minnesota. The Indian Elder Program specialist assists Indian and non-Indian Community agencies in the development of culturally sensitive programs and services and works directly with Indian elders promoting aging services and programs. Overall the program acts as the Minnesota Board on Aging and the Minnesota Department of Human Services' liaison to Indian Elder communities. The Minnesota Board on Aging has partnered with the American Indian communities in Minnesota to develop "Wisdom Steps,” a preventive health promotion that focuses on health screenings, health education and healthy living activities and offers incentives to encourage participation in preventive health programs. Wisdom Steps fosters community partnerships and coordinates resources to provide increased advocacy and access to services that will improve the health of American Indian elders. The Indian Elder Desk provides community resource information and serves as a liaison between public agencies and American Indian elder programs. Currently, it is assisting tribes with developing tribally operated long-term care programs, focusing on home and community-based services.
