This information is for parents, including foster parents and other caretakers, who have children under 21 living with them.

What is the income limit for my family?
Adults and children have different income limits. The income limit and whose income is counted depend on your age and who lives with you.

Can my family get coverage if we have a house or car?
Yes, usually the home you live in and a car are not counted toward the asset limit that parents must meet. Children do not have an asset limit.

Can my family get coverage if we have savings, a retirement account or other assets?
Yes, but you may have an asset limit. Retirement accounts do not count toward the asset limit. Children do not have an asset limit.

What will coverage cost?
You may have to pay a monthly premium. The amount, if any, depends on your income, who lives with you and who gets coverage. Parents may also have copays for some services. Children do not have copays.

When will coverage start?
After you are approved, coverage may:

  • • Go back to the date your application was received
  • • Go back three months from the date your application was received
  • • Begin the month after you are approved, or pay your first premium if you have one.
  • Call your county office if you have questions about when coverage can start.

Can I get coverage if I have other health insurance?
You may still be able to get coverage even if you have other health insurance. You must tell us if you:

  • • Have other health insurance
  • • Can be covered under someone else’s insurance
  • • Can get coverage through an employer or military service.
  • Sometimes we can pay the cost of the other insurance so you can keep that coverage.

What if I have a child with a disability?
There are special options for children under age 21 who have a disability.

Which health care program should I apply for?
Different programs have different rules and costs. We will review your application for all programs that you may qualify for unless you tell us not to. Some people want to apply only for MinnesotaCare. Before doing so, read the differences between Medical Assistance and MinnesotaCare.
