Personal needs allowance: Amount of funds an individual may keep from Medical Assistance to use for personal needs.

Use of Funds

Funds are available each month to individual who residing in an Intermediate Care Facility for Persons with Developmental Disabilities for clothing and personal needs of their choosing. The personal needs allowance is $95 per month.

ICF/DD providers are responsible to:

  • • Adhere to all active treatment standards regarding training and choice regarding use of these funds
  • • Safeguard individuals' rights
  • Case managers are responsible to oversee the use of funds.

    Inappropriate Use of Funds

This money is not available to supplement ICFs/DD for items provided as part of the daily ICF/DD per diem, durable medical equipment or any other MA service.
For example, basic supply items such as toothpaste and shampoo should be provided. If individuals wish to purchase a different brand, then they would pay for it out of their personal needs allowance.
