  • Introduction to MMIS

For information about the purpose and functions of MMIS, refer to MMIS LTSS Manual – About MMIS.

    Appearance

The MMIS background is black as a default.

The text appears in different colors, and the colors have meanings. For example, when using the default display setting, green text is editable. The standard (i.e., default) screen colors are as follows.

    Data category

    Color

    Output

    White (protected)

    Entry fields

    Green (not protected; editable)

    Tags

    Blue

    Errors

    Red

There is a banner that appears at the top of the screen with tools. For example, under File, you can print a screen. You can also use tools in this banner to change the background color using these steps:

    1. Go to Options and select Display.

    2. Select Colors.

    3. Select the radio button for Background.

    4. Select the desired color.

    5. Select OK or Apply.

When you terminate your MMIS session (i.e., log out), a window will appear asking if you want to save the changed settings. You can save changes to the appearance of screens by selecting Yes or return to the default settings by selecting No.

    When working in MMIS, remember:

  • · The text is in all-caps. You cannot change this setting.
  • · There are many abbreviations used in MMIS to fit more text on the screen.
  • · Each letter takes up the same amount of space on the screen. As a result, on-screen text can be more difficult to read without variation in character spacing. You cannot change the spacing.
  • · There is a banner at the bottom of each screen that shows the actions of programmable function keys (i.e., PF or F keys) and which keys are available for use with that screen.
  • Access

To learn how to access MMIS, refer to MMIS LTSS Manual – Access to MMIS.

“Navigation” refers to when you move around in a screen, display more information available within a screen or move between subsystems. For an overview of basic actions in MMIS, refer to MMIS LTSS Manual – Basic actions and common errors.

This section provides detailed information about the MMIS navigation tools.

    Navigate within a screen

You use your keyboard, not your mouse, to work in MMIS. The first space for each field is not clearly identified or highlighted in any way, so using the keyboard arrow keys or the mouse may not bring you to a place that allows typing. Depending on how your keyboard is programmed, you can use the following keys to navigate within a screen:

  • · The tab key moves the cursor across the screen to the beginning of each field. The cursor is a white rectangle that takes up one character space.
  • · The enter key with the crooked arrow moves down the page to each field. Depending on the programming of your keyboard or the subsystem you are in, this key may move you to the next screen within the current subsystem.
  • · The shift and tab keys together move the cursor backward to the previous field.
  • · The home key moves the cursor to the top of the page at the NEXT field.
  • · The delete and end keys remove characters in a field the cursor is currently on.
  • · The designated function keys allow you to view additional text related to the current screen.
  • MMIS screens are a fixed size. They do not have a scroll bar to move up, down, left or right. When a screen includes more information than can be shown within its fixed size, a + (plus) appears at the top or bottom right corner of the screen. This additional information might be a long list or more details about a field on the screen or text of an exception code. You can press F8 (next) and F7 (previous) to scroll within the list.

Note: F8 and F7 do not bring you to the next or previous screen. They navigate within a long list of data related to the same screen.

Navigate to other screens within the same subsystem

The name of the current screen appears at the top center of the screen. You can move to other screens within the same subsystem in two ways:

    1. Press the transmit key (usually the enter or ctrl key) to move to the next screen. The NEXT field in the upper left corner indicates the screen that will appear if you press the transmit key.

Example: When working in the screening document within the prior authorization subsystem, you begin at the ALT1 screen. Press the transmit key to move to the ALT2 screen, which is the next screen in MMIS.

    2. Move directly to another screen within the same MMIS subsystem by following these steps:

  • · Move the cursor to the NEXT field.
  • · Type the abbreviation for the screen.
  • · Press the transmit key to move to that screen.
  • Example: If you want to move directly to the ALT4 screen in the screening document, type ALT4 directly over the text in the NEXT field and press the transmit key to move to that screen.

    Navigate to other MMIS subsystems

To navigate between subsystems, you must use the function keys. You cannot use the NEXT field to move to another subsystem.

Example: When working in the service agreement within the prior authorization subsystem, you cannot type an abbreviation for a recipient subsystem screen.

For additional information about using navigation, refer to:

  • · MMIS LTSS Manual – LTC screening document navigation.
  • · MMIS LTSS Manual – Service agreement navigation.
  • · MMIS LTSS Manual – Function keys.
  • Enter, delete and save text/data

To enter text in a text field:

    1. Move the cursor to the beginning of the field.

    2. Type the text.

    3. Continue to complete text fields as needed, depending on the action and subsystem.

    3. Press the transmit key to move to the next screen for more text entry.

Tip: When using change (C) mode, you often will type over existing text in a field. Typing over text replaces existing text in that field. However, you may need to delete additional remaining characters after you type over previous text.

To delete text in a text field, use any of the following options:

  • · Move the cursor to the beginning of the field and press the delete key to erase each character one at a time.
  • · Move the cursor to the first space of the field and press the end key to erase all characters in that field.
  • · Type over the characters and delete remaining characters if needed.
  • To save:

    1. Press F3 to save the text and exit that subsystem after you complete the work in the screen(s). This action returns you to the subsystem’s key panel screen.

    2. Continue to press F3 until you reach the SESSION TERMINATED screen to exit MMIS.

    To exit without saving:

    1. Press F6 at any time when working in MMIS to return to the subsystem’s key panel screen without saving a newly created document or without saving changes made to text or data on a previously saved document.

    2. Continue to press F3 or F6 until you reach the SESSION TERMINATED screen to exit MMIS.

For more instructions, refer to MMIS LTSS Manual – Access to MMIS.
