SSIS Worker Basics Training
The Social Service Information System (SSIS) Basics is a two-day course is to provide computer training for child protection workers. This instruction uses navigation and data entry that is applicable to all program areas.
The SSIS Basics course is designed for child protection social workers. Agencies with non-child protection staff who would like to attend this training, these workers may register. However if a class is full and there are child protection workers on the waiting list, the trainer may cancel non-child protection workers from the course.
SSIS Basics training uses a ‘life of the case’ model. This means it covers how to enter information into SSIS over the life of a child protection investigation from intake to permanency via reunification. Thus, what trainees enter on day one of training is built upon in day two. Trainees must attend 14 hours (both days) to receive credit.
Target audience
Newly hired agency child protection workers who are required to attend Child Welfare Foundations Training.
Time
Class begins at 8:30 AM and ends 4:30 PM each day (14 hours total for the two days). Two 15 minute breaks are provided in the morning and afternoon as well as an hour break for lunch. Lunch is not included but the trainer can suggest local food options.
Registration
Registration is through TrainLink and closes three days before the course start date.
Trainees who have not registered for or taken a course on TrainLink must register for a unique key. Follow the steps on the Unique Key Request Form page to get a unique key.
If a class is full, participants should sign up on the waitlist. Walk-ins cannot sign up on site and will not be allowed to participate in training; therefore, they will not be given credit for attending. Classes may be cancelled if fewer than five (5) registrants enroll. Trainees will receive additional information one week prior to training, including handouts, maps and parking instructions.
Prerequisites
In order for SSIS trainers to keep all participants engaged and complete the curriculum in the designated time, registrants must come prepared with basic computer skills. SSIS trainers ask that the coordinator who submits registrations also ensures that each participant knows:
— mouse navigation
— keyboard commands (e.g., Ctrl+key, tabbing)
— scrolling, maximizing, and minimizing screens
— opening and saving files, and printing documents
— terminology (e.g., tool bars, menu bars, toggle)
— using icons and menu bars
— formatting and editing commands (e.g., copy, paste, bold).
Trainers will not provide instruction on these skills. Trainees who cannot demonstrate these basic skills may not receive credit for the course. Please make sure that your county’s mentor or trainer works with staff to review these basic skills before attending training. Preparation guarantees an improved training experience.
SSIS Basics Training Web-Based Courses
Basics participants are encouraged to complete the web-based training (WBT) courses found on TrainLink prior to coming to training. WBTs are listed with Web Based Training as the delivery method in the TrainLink course catalog.
