Self-paced online course: Cultural Responsiveness in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Services

Description

This introductory level course gives an overview of culturally responsive practices and provides strategies for culturally responsive practices when providing services to people with ASD and related conditions.

Participants will:

  • Increase their awareness and sensitivity to the needs of ethnically diverse communities.
  • Recognize the role cultural responsiveness plays in providing quality care.
  • Recognize diverse child-rearing practices, family dynamics and decision-making roles.
  • Identify ways to build trust and partnerships with families and caregivers.
  • Identify ways to communicate and work with caregivers and interpreters.
  • Acknowledge cultural barriers that impede access to services and resources.
  • Take into account considerations when planning to provide services in the home.
  • Recognize cultural norms, including language, perceptions and beliefs related to ASD and related conditions, religion and traditional treatments.
