Independent living skills (ILS) therapies

Definition

Independent living skills (ILS) therapies: Art, music or recreational therapies with specific therapeutic goals and outcomes.

Eligibility

A person is eligible to receive ILS therapies when the services:

  • · Are directed toward acquiring, maintaining or improving the person’s community living skills
  • · Are not diversionary
  • · Meet specific therapeutic goals and outcomes.
  • Covered services

    This service covers:

  • · Art therapy
  • · Music therapy
  • · Recreational therapy.
  • Non-covered services

    ILS therapies do not cover services that duplicate other Minnesota state plan or waiver services.

    Remote support

    ILS therapies can be delivered through remote support. Services delivered through remote support must meet all the requirements listed on CBSM – Remote support.

    Settings

    A person may receive ILS therapies in their home or in the community.

    Provider standards and qualifications

    ILS therapies are DHS enrollment-required services. For more information, see CBSM – Waiver/AC service provider overview.

    Background study

    To provide ILS therapies, providers must have a background study. For more information, see CBSM – Waiver/AC service provider overview – Required DHS background studies for direct-contact services.

    Additional requirements

    Art therapists

    Art therapists must meet both of the following requirements:

    1. Be a graduate from a master's program in art therapy

    2. Hold one of the following credentials under the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB):

  • · Art therapist registered (ATR)
  • · Art therapist registered – board certified (ATR-BC)
  • · Art therapist registered – provisional (ATR-P) and under the supervision of an ATR or ATR-BC.
  • Music therapists

    Music therapists must meet all of the following requirements:

  • · Be a graduate from an institution accredited by the American Music Therapy Association
  • · Be credentialed under the Certification Board for Music Therapists
  • · Be board-certified as a music therapist.
  • Recreational specialists

    Recreational specialists must meet all of the following requirements:

  • · Be a graduate from an accredited baccalaureate program
  • · Complete an internship of 360 hours under the supervision of a certified therapeutic recreation specialist
  • · Pass the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification exam
  • · Be certified as a therapeutic recreation specialist.
  • Authorization, rates and billing
