Discussing AAC Do’s and Don’ts
During a presentation about augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) we were educated on how to be mindful about our language choices. When discussing communication differences avoid use the following phrases: non-verbal, non-communicative, severe, deficit, impairment or natural language. Instead, according to Communication First, use phrases such as: AAC users, people with communication access needs, people who cannot use speech as their primary means of expression, or spoken language.

Direct care workforce shortage survey
Please share this survey with your networks: Minnesota direct care staffing shortage impact annual survey. It will be open through the month of January.
Breaks law
New meal and rest break requirements will be taking effect. Direct care employees (all types of services) must be allowed to receive a paid 15-minute break every four consecutive hours worked and an unpaid 30-minute meal break when working six or more consecutive hours. Learn more at dli.mn.gov/breaks.
Minimum wage
Minnesota's minimum wage will increase to $11.41 an hour. The training wage for workers under 20 during their first 90 days will be $9.31 an hour.
Authority for DLI to better enforce violations of employment laws
Minn. Stat. 177.27, subd. 5 now gives the DLI commissioner authority to apply for an order enjoining and restraining violations of employment laws under DLI’s jurisdiction. Previously, DLI only had this authority for violations of the Child Labor Act. Some violations, including certain violations of the Women’s Economic Security Act, retaliation and more, are so time-sensitive that irreparable damage may be done to the employee by the time a compliance order is issued and resolved with an employer. This authority provides a pathway to swiftly restrain and enjoin violations of that nature.
Ensuring direct care professionals have access to Workers Compensation
Clarification was made concerning who qualifies as an employee for purposes of workers’ compensation related to certain direct care programs under the Minnesota Department of Human Services.
New retirement program for some care professionals
