Two-day virtual training announcement: Assess, Conceptualize and Diagnose Mental Health Disorders in Young Children Using the DC: 0-5

Date and time

9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Jan. 7-8, 2025

Description

This training equips clinicians and mental health professionals with the skills to assess, diagnose and treat mental health and developmental disorders in children age five or younger using DC: 0-5 Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Development Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood, published by Zero to Three.

Certified DC: 0-5 trainers Catherine Wright, PsyD, LP, LPCC, and Teya Dahle, LICSW, will present the free, two-day virtual training “Assess, Conceptualize and Diagnose Mental Health Disorders in Young Children using the DC: 0-5.”

Background information

When a comprehensive multi-disciplinary evaluation (CMDE) provider or other qualified assessor completes a standard diagnostic assessment of a person who is age five or younger, the assessor must use the current edition of the DC: 0-5 to meet eligibility criteria for Early Intensive Developmental and Behavioral Intervention (EIDBI) services.

Participant instructions

All participants must have a copy of DC: 0-5 Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood. To purchase the book from Zero to Three, refer to Zero to Three Store – DC: 0-5 Digital (Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood) V2.0. DHS encourages participants to download all materials before the training.

Note: The presenters will email the participants handouts and homework for the training approximately one week before the training. Participants will receive additional materials the day of the training.

Learning objectives

After the training, participants will be able to understand:

  • The basics of early childhood development.
  • The importance of using a multigenerational approach to assess young children.
  • The advantages and disadvantages of making diagnoses of infants and young children.

  • The similarities and the differences between the current diagnostic system (DSM-5) and the new diagnostic framework (DC: 0-5).
