New ratings for Assisted Living Report Card
On Feb. 26, 2025, DHS published new ratings for its Assisted Living Report Card. We added over 230 new resident health, safety and staffing ratings based on Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) surveys.
DHS will add new resident health, safety and staffing ratings to the Assisted Living Report Card every quarter. These ratings combined with the report card’s resident quality of life and family satisfaction ratings give a comprehensive review of assisted living quality.
Data expansion
When DHS launched the Assisted Living Report Card in January 2024, it had data on 450 of the largest facilities, which are home to almost half of the people who use assisted living in Minnesota.
As of February 2025, the Assisted Living Report Card has ratings for 1,095 assisted living settings, which represents about half of Minnesota’s assisted living facilities and 86% of the state’s licensed assisted living capacity.
Background information
The Assisted Living Report Card provides information to help people make decisions about assisted living. Governor Tim Walz and the 2019 Legislature authorized the Assisted Living Report Card. DHS, the Minnesota Board on Aging and MDH partnered to develop it and modeled it after the Nursing Home Report Card. Dr. Tetyana Shippee at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health led research and development of the quality measures.
Assisted living in Minnesota
MDH licenses and regulates assisted living. DHS and the Minnesota Board on Aging manage the Assisted Living Report Card and conduct surveys that measure resident quality of life and family satisfaction.
