A

Asleep staffing hours: Staffing hours when direct care staff are allowed to sleep but are available to respond to planned or unplanned events. These hours can only be on site.

Average staffing ratio: The relationship between the person receiving services, direct care staff and the number of people served by one staff person over an average period of time.

Awake staffing hours: Staffing hours when direct care staff must remain awake and engaged. These hours can be on site or remote.

Direct care staffing hours: Staffing hours when staff provide direct support and assistance with activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living and training to people who receive services. These hours can happen in a person’s home or during community activities, as directed in the person’s support plan. They can be provided by nurses or supervisors acting as direct care staff. The hours can be shared or individual.

Individual staffing hours: Staffing hours when direct care staff are brought in solely to provide support as a one-to-one interaction specific to a person’s needs.

O

On-site staff: Direct care staff who are physically present in the setting. These staff can be awake or asleep.

R

Remote monitoring staffing hours: Staffing hours when direct care staff are not physically present in the residential setting but are engaged in real-time service provision. The staff can only be awake. The hours can be shared or individual.

S

Shared staffing hours: Staffing hours when direct care staff serve or are available to all people receiving services in a home.
