Acupuncture Services
Overview
Acupuncture services includes the practice of inserting acupuncture needles through the skin and the use of other biophysical methods of acupuncture point stimulation by a licensed provider.

Eligible Members
Acupuncture services are covered for eligible MHCP members.
Documentation
Before the start of acupuncture services, the acupuncture services provider must document a brief history of the patient’s presenting health condition or need. The medical record must also include the acupuncture provider’s documentation of a limited exam of the condition the provider treated or the affected body area.
Covered Services
MHCP covers acupuncture only when provided by a licensed acupuncturist or by another Minnesota licensed provider for whom acupuncture is within the provider’s scope of practice and who has specific acupuncture training or credentialing.
MHCP covers acupuncture for the following health conditions or needs:
Noncovered Services
MHCP does not reimburse the following services separately.
Items that fall within an acupuncturist’s scope of practice that are based on Traditional Chinese Medicine are considered part of an acupuncturist’s visit and are not reimbursed separately by MHCP.
MHCP does not cover acupuncture maintenance treatment where the member’s symptoms are not showing improvement.
Noncovered Conditions
MHCP does not cover acupuncture for the following health conditions or needs.
Authorization Requirements
MHCP allows up to 20 units of acupuncture services per calendar year without authorization. Request authorization if additional units are needed. Submit the Authorization Form (DHS-4695) (PDF) to the authorization medical review agent.

Providers are responsible to coordinate services. Review MHCP Billing Policy for general billing requirements and guidance when submitting claims.
