Provider Identifier

Overview

This section in the Minnesota Provider Screening and Enrollment (MPSE) portal contains information about the enrollment record’s provider identifier. A provider identifier is either the enrollment record’s National Provider Identifier (NPI) or Unique Minnesota Provider Identifier (UMPI).

Update a Provider Identifier

If you use an NPI as your provider identifier, you must first request an NPI through the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) before updating your provider identifier in the MPSE portal. If you are requesting an UMPI to be assigned to the enrollment record, Minnesota Health Care Programs (MHCP) will create this during their review of your request.

Steps to Update a Provider Identifier

1. Once you have started an Enrollment Record Request, MPSE will open the Manage Enrollment Record page.

2. Click Edit next to the enrollment record you have selected to update the provider identifier for.

3. Using the Right-Side Navigation, click Provider Identifier to go to the Manage Provider Identifier page.

4. Click View/Edit in the User Actions column of the provider identifier.

5. If you are using an NPI number, select No to the Use UMPI question. If you are requesting an UMPI to be created and assigned to the enrollment record, select Yes.

6. If applicable, enter the NPI number in the NPI/UMPI field. Note that, if the answer to the Use UMPI question was Yes, the NPI/UMPI field will not be able to be edited as it will be for MHCP staff use only.

7. Enter the Effective Date for the NPI/UMPI.

8. The Available for Reuse and Active fields are for MHCP staff use only.

9. Once you have added or updated all the information you need, click the Continue button at the bottom of the MPSE page to save your information and return to the Manage Provider Identifier page.

10. If there are no other updates needed to this enrollment record request, you can use the Right-Side Navigation and click Submit Request to submit your request for approval.
