Medicaid Management Information System (MMIS) exception codes: A three-digit numeric code MMIS uses when information entered into MMIS is invalid or needs review.

Process and procedures

When creating or updating a service agreement or screening document in MMIS, the user should press the F9 function key to begin the exception control function. This function:

  • · Verifies the data entered agrees with existing data in associated MMIS subsystems: Provider, Recipient and Reference.
  • · Posts edit(s) at the bottom of the MMIS screen when information is invalid or needs review.
  • MMIS displays a short text description of the first exception code at the bottom of MMIS screens. To see short text for a different exception code, the user should place the cursor on the code or status and press the F1 function key.

To view the complete text for any posted exception codes, the user should place the cursor on the code or status and press the F4 function key. This text:

  • · Describes the reason the exception code posted.
  • · Helps the user resolve data entry issues.
  • The user should press F6 once to return to document. After resolving needed exception code, the user should press the F9 function key to rerun the exception control function to verify all exception codes are resolved.

    Edit status

Exception codes have one of three statuses:

  • · Status of 3 denies the document and needs to be resolved before the document can be approved.
  • · Status of 4 suspends the document and needs to be resolved before the document can be approved.
  • · Status of 6 is informational only. The user should read the edit text for relevant information but generally does not need to take action. Informational edits do not prevent documents from being approved.
