Updated MMIS coding for assistive technology assessments and equipment for people using the DD Waiver

Effective July 1, 2023, lead agencies must use updated codes for people using the DD Waiver who access assistive technology assessments and equipment. DHS has been working to decrease barriers preventing people from receiving timely access to assistive technology assessments and assistive technology equipment.

These updated codes allow DHS to eliminate the complex review process for any T2029 claim with a UB or UD modifier. The complex review process was meant to prevent waiver programs from funding durable medical equipment (DME) available through Medical Assistance (MA). It caused long, unnecessary delays in claim approvals for assistive technology assessments and assistive technology equipment which are not covered by MA but may be covered by a waiver program.

Note: Right now, the updated codes apply to the DD Waiver only. DHS is reviewing whether the updated codes will be used for other waiver programs after the state uses the funding provided by the American Rescue Plan Act.

Codes for Type R and Type S DD Waiver service agreements

T2029 UB Assistive Technology/Equipment: The lead agency must use this new code that replaces T2029 (no modifier) — Assistive Technology/Equipment.

T2029 UD Assistive Technology/Assessment: The lead agency must keep using this existing code for assistive technology assessments.

Claims with T2029 UB and T2029 UD will bypass the complex claims review process.

When to use

T2029 (no modifier) Assistive Technology/Equipment: The lead agency can only use this code for service agreement line item(s) with a start date before July 1, 2023, and an end date before June 30, 2024. The lead agency will receive an edit in the following situations:

  • · If the lead agency tries to approve T2029 (no modifier) — Assistive Technology/Equipment for a DD Waiver service agreement line item that has a start date before and end date after June 30, 2024, they will receive edit 381 (RATE RECORD NOT FOUND). The lead agency must create a separate T2029 UB — Assistive Technology/Equipment line item for the remaining service days after June 30, 2024, because T2029 (no modifier) services must end by that date.
  • · If the lead agency tries to approve T2029 (no modifier) — Assistive Technology/Equipment for a DD Waiver service agreement line item with a start date after June 30, 2024, they will receive edit 323 (PROC CODE INVALID FOR SVC AGMT). The lead agency must use T2029 UB — Assistive Technology/Equipment for the whole service period.
  • T2029 UB Assistive Technology/Equipment: The lead agency must use this code for service agreement line item(s) with a start date on or after July 1, 2023.

T2029 UD Assistive Technology/Assessment: The lead agency must keep using this code to approve assistive technology assessments in line with previous policy.
