UNITS FOR PEOPLE WITH MULTIPLE RESIDENCES

ISSUE DATE: 04/2025

Although a person may have 2 or more residences during the same month, a person can be in only 1 assistance unit. See 0007 (Reporting) for people who move during a month. Follow the procedures below for people who maintain multiple residences throughout a month.

MFIP, DWP:
If a child lives with both separated or divorced parents during the same month, consider the child to be in the unit where the child spends the most time. If the time is equal, or parents alternate living in the child's home, consider the child to be in the unit which applied first.

When a minor child alternates between parents for at least 1 calendar month at a time, consider the child to be in the unit where the child lived a majority of time that month unless the child is with one parent for the majority of the time each month for at least nine consecutive months. Terminate the case when the child is absent.

When a minor child's home is with 1 parent for the majority of time in each month for at least 9 consecutive calendar months, and that minor child visits or vacations with the other parent, the minor child's home remains with the 1st parent even when the stay with the 2nd parent is for all or the majority of the months in the period of the temporary absence. See 0014.09 (Assistance Units - Temporary Absence).

SNAP:
Adults:
If an adult has more than 1 residence, determine which residence has the unit that should include the person. Follow the order below to determine which unit that is. Stop at the 1st circumstance that applies; do not consider the remaining situations.

Note: Follow the guidance below to determine the residence of the mandatory adult unit members when children remain in 1 residence but the adults rotate who is living there to care for the children. See 0014.03.06 (Determining the SNAP Unit).

1.

The residence where their spouse lives.

2.

The residence which is the only one where they incur shelter costs.

3.

The residence where they eat a majority of meals.

4.

The residence where they spend a majority of time.

5.

The residence which is the only one where another person would be part of the same unit (sibling, parent).

6.

The residence they choose.

Children:
If a child has more than 1 residence, the child must only be a member of one unit. The first unit to apply may include the child regardless of the percentage of shared parenting time. See 0011.21 (Receipt of Other Assistance).

When the child or children on a SNAP case are included in a request for MFIP or DWP, follow the MFIP or DWP assistance unit policies and procedures to determine if they are eligible for MFIP or DWP.

MSA, GRH:
No provisions.

GA:
