  • Updates

    Direct care workforce shortage

  • · DHS staff have been contacted by many providers who are experiencing shortages. They have been meeting with organizations and trying to help when possible.
  • · Community Support Services (CSS) would like to hear about workforce issues. Dan Baker will connect them with Stacie Enders and Linda Wolford, who are co-leading workforce shortage crisis mitigation efforts.
  • New psychotropic medication manual for 245D service providers

A draft will be ready for committee review in September.

Positive Support Transition Plan (PSTP)-related documents

A draft of the PSTP example will be ready for committee review in October.

    BIRF

The committee is interested in reviewing the BIRF Olmstead data on a quarterly basis that is posted online:

  • Tip: to find the BIRF data reports, search “positive supports” as the keyword.

    Free training opportunity

Integrating positive behavioral support and psychiatric treatment in community-based care. “This session will challenge the notion that behavioral support will only work if and when someone is psychiatrically stable. Unique perspectives from a psychiatrist and a behavioral practitioner will be shared to emphasize the importance of synergy to optimize available resources. Presenters will share case studies highlighting strategies and coordination of care emphasizing the need to consider medical, emotional, and social well-being in Positive Behavioral Support. The session is guided by the principle of not letting your pursuit of perfect get in the way of good – it’s a missed opportunity.”

    Discussion

    Children in crisis

  • · There is not enough system support for children in crisis.
  • · DHS staff have been meeting with people who work with kids. There is a need for everyone to better understand the larger system. The Community Capacity and Positive Supports Team is not always aware of resources outside of waiver services.
  • · They are looking into how to better support children who are losing their home.
  • · This problem seems to be getting bigger.
  • · Teams are considering: What do we know? What can we use? What resources are out there? What do we need from a larger workgroup?
  • · More people are becoming aware of how trauma effects people.
  • · Navigating the system can seem like a secret code for families to figure out.
  • Review of the committee’s 2020 Olmstead recommendations

    The committee noted:

  • · Apps and social media can be helpful for supporting people in finding other people who share their interests near their community. Here is one example (posted on the Disability Hub MN). EPRC members can pass along to the teams they are supporting: Meetup - We are what we do.
  • · Several law changes were recently made related to telehealth. See lines 210.1, 228.8, and 228.21 of the HF 33 2nd Engrossment – 92nd Legislature, 2021 1st Special Session Bill Text for more information.
  • · Stacy Danov will share more about telehealth and the ICI contract once it is executed.
