Covered Services

Independent licensed practical nurses (LPN’s) provide either:

  • · Regular home care nursing
  • · Complex home care nursing
  • Non-Covered Services

    Supervision is not included in the definitions of licensed practical nursing. However monitoring is an authorized function of practical nursing.

    Only a registered nurse (RN) may delegate to and supervise nursing personnel

    An LPN may not delegate a medical or nursing activity to another LPN or to unlicensed assistive personnel

    An independent LPN may not provide and be paid for nursing services to the following:

  • · Spouse or minor child
  • · Foster child under 18 years of age and living in the nurse’s home.
  • An independent nurse must not provide and be paid for nursing services if also one of the following:

  • · Owner of a home care nursing agency in which the person receives services
  • · Parent of a minor or spouse through the CDCS service option.
  • Provider Standards and Qualifications

    Professional nurses who practice independently must take on the responsibilities that go along with being a small business such as worker’s compensation, taxes and insurance.

    Independent LPN must:

  • · Be currently licensed as an LPN by the Minnesota Board of Nursing with no restrictions
  • · Be enrolled as a Minnesota Health Care Programs (MHCP) provider
  • · Be supervised by an RN
  • · Be under contract with the county
  • · Maintain Class A Home Care License.
