Helping ensure access to assistive technology

Throughout 2022, DHS and its community partners will work together to make assistive technology available to more people with disabilities and older adults. We will take several actions to support the initiative, including sharing information and resources with lead agencies. The goal is to increase the use of technology that allows people with disabilities to be more independent, improve their health and interact with members of their community.

Resources to share

To get started, here are some resources to help people access internet services:

  • · Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP): The program was created by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to help households struggling to pay for internet service. Eligible households can enroll in ACP through an approved provider or by visiting ACPBenefit.org. Lead agencies are encouraged to share this information with the people they support.
  • · Office of Broadband Development: This website hosted by Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) provides a collection of resources for state and local programs and information to help improve availability of high-speed broadband services.
  • · Internet service providers: Contact companies that provide internet access in your community. They may be able to highlight programs not listed by DEED, or they may have internal programs to provide internet connectivity for a household that could not otherwise afford the retail pricing for monthly service.
  • Questions

Additional information about assistive technology will be shared each month. To get more information or ask questions, use the DSD Contact Form.
