    Direct care workforce shortage

The workforce shortage presentation at the St. Louis County Conference in October seemed to go well. While the presenters did not get a chance to finish all their slides, that was mostly due to audience engagement. Some of the topics brought up were:

  • · Some providers are hesitant to use technology to support people due to liability concerns, so DHS will address that topic in the next monthly technology eList announcement.
  • · One provider mentioned how her staff do not have health insurance, so the presenters shared information on how to get them signed up for free or low-cost insurance through MNSure.
  • · There was a misconception that all providers are making record profits and could pay staff more, so the presenters explained how different providers receive different rates for services – that some could pay their employees more but others cannot due to low service rates. It was also explained how the rates need to cover more than just salaries, such as benefits, supervisor salaries, client no-shows, building rentals, etc.

    Review of annual recommendations

The committee reviewed recommendations from their most recent annual evaluation report:

  • · For item #1, public feedback was received that case managers appreciate the monthly technology eList announcements, but would like to see the information live somewhere online, rather than just being emailed out. So, the announcements are being consolidated and will be posted online sometime in 2023.
  • · There was no new information shared for items 2 through 5.
  • Closing

Members were asked if anyone wants to volunteer to write the committee’s annual report this year. If so, they should let Stacie know by Nov. 14.
