2027 EIDBI CPT code updates

Effective Jan. 1, 2027, EIDBI high-intensity intervention services will transition from CPT code 0373T to the new permanent CPT code 97159.

The American Medical Association (AMA) develops and maintains the CPT code set.

DHS actions

DHS will:

  • · Implement the new CPT code for high-intensity intervention services.
  • · Update definitions and policies that affect other existing EIDBI services.
  • · Update systems and billing processes to support the changes.
  • · Update the EIDBI billing grid (PDF).
  • · Update the EIDBI Benefit Policy Manual, as needed.
  • · Communicate policy updates and implementation guidance to providers.
  • Update on additional service codes

DHS will not add any other additional service codes included in the 2027 CPT code set to the EIDBI benefit at this time.

We will consult with the EIDBI advisory council, EIDBI learning collaborative and other interested parties to discuss potential future services and whether to add them to the benefit. These discussions do not guarantee that we will add additional services.

    Any future additions require:

  • · State and federal approval.
  • · Coding work.
  • Providers actions

To prepare for the transition, providers should:

  • · Read updates about the new code and implementation requirements on DHS – Minnesota Health Care Programs (MHCP) provider news and updates.
  • · Update electronic health record (EHR) and billing systems in coordination with software vendors.
  • · Update documentation templates to reflect applicable coding and documentation requirements.
  • · Train staff on the code change and related processes.
  • · Revise policies and procedures to align with updated EIDBI requirements as needed.
  • · Contact each payer (e.g., commercial insurers, managed care organizations [MCOs], Medicaid) to confirm and understand their implementation processes, authorization requirements, billing guidance and timelines.
Note: Payers establish their own coverage, authorization and reimbursement policies.
