New resource guide for working with interpreters now available

DHS created a new resource for certified assessors and other lead agency staff who work with interpreters. MnCHOICES Certified Assessor Resource: Guide for Working with Interpreters, DHS-6791T (PDF) is now available in the DHS Searchable document library (eDocs).

We created this new resource guide to:

  • · Support lead agencies in providing meaningful access to programs, services and activities for people with limited English proficiency (LEP).
  • · Provide a resource for lead agency staff who work with interpreters.
  • · Share useful information, including best practices for working with interpreters before, during and after visits.
  • Background information

Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 requires recipients of federal financial assistance to take reasonable steps to make their programs, services and activities accessible by eligible people with LEP. Part of the federal mandate is to provide meaningful access to programs by working with a qualified interpreter. The certified assessor is responsible to:

  • · Provide interpreter services for people with LEP free of charge and without undue delay.
  • · Follow lead agency protocols to access interpreter services.
