Expanded eligibility for Minnesota ABLE accounts

As of Jan. 1, 2026, people whose disability began before age 46 (previously 26) are now eligible to open a Minnesota ABLE account. That means millions more people, including many veterans, can:

  • · Save for disability-related expenses.
  • · Maintain critical benefits like Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medical Assistance (i.e., Medicaid).
  • · Enjoy tax advantages.
  • What is a Minnesota ABLE account?

A Minnesota ABLE account is a tax-advantaged savings option people with disabilities and their families can use to save, invest and spend their money for expenses related to living with a disability. ABLE accounts allow people to build savings while preserving benefits such as SSI, Medical Assistance and others. Minnesota ABLE accounts can be an alternative or an add-on to supplemental or special needs trusts.

How do I open a Minnesota ABLE account?

You can open a Minnesota ABLE account online at Minnesota ABLE Plan or with a paper enrollment form. To request a paper form, call 888-609-8872. You cannot go to a bank or physical location to open a Minnesota ABLE account.

    How can I learn more?

To learn more about Minnesota ABLE accounts and find answers to common questions, refer to Minnesota ABLE Plan. The website includes information about eligibility, account limits, plan benefits, investment options, fees and more.

Whom do I contact if I have questions?
