19.12 Sanction Types

ISSUE DATE: 06/2026

A sanction is a reduction of benefits for not complying with MFIP requirements.

  • · The reduction is applied to the full household’s cash benefits, not just to the participant’s portion of those benefits.
  • · Months that a participant is sanctioned count toward the 60-month limit.

    Which Worker Initiates Sanction Process?

    Employment counselor.

    Child support worker.

    How Much Are Benefits Reduced?

    1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th consecutive occurrence:
    5% of the cash portion of the MFIP grant received by the assistance unit.


    7th consecutive occurrence:
    100% -- case closes. See 19.30 (Closing Cases for 100% Sanction).

    1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th occurrences:
    25% of the cash portion of the MFIP grant received by the assistance unit.

    7th consecutive occurrence:
    100% -- case closes. See 19.30 (Closing Cases for 100% Sanction).

    Do These Sanctions Count towards the 7th sanction?  

    Yes, if sanctions occur consecutively.

    Yes, if sanctions occur consecutively.

    Other.

    Employment Services agencies may opt to discontinue support services, such as transportation.
